When I first read it 30 years ago, I thought it one of the best books I'd ever read. Then, slowly, my taste in books matured. Because I so loved it, I read everything else Ms. Goudge wrote over the years, and didn't like any of them, not even Garden's sequel. When I saw it as a kindle bargain, I thought, "WOW, one of my favorite books; what a treat to read it again," as I had forgotten it all -- except the fire and what happened during the fire, of course, just as anyone who reads it will never forget the fire episode.Sadly, it was just OK this time around :( Hope this means I've matured rather than soured. I did not like this book for the same reason I do not like daytime TV serials. The characters and plots are weak. It is a series of events where each character when presented with a choice of paths chooses the one which will create the most unhappiness for themselves and others. The main character at the beginning of the book is so incredibly self centered that she takes another woman's baby because she wants to make her own life easier. Forty or more years later when it is clear that her choice has caused nothing for heartache for numerous people, she continues to make the same kind of decisions creating the same chaos and misery. While there may be some people in life who are this self centered and one dimensional, I have thankfully encountered very few of them. I have no place in my real or imaginary life for stories like this and will not read the sequel.
